| REFLECTIONS OF THE WORLD OF SOUNDSTHE SOUND OF MEMORY, THE MEMORY OF SOUND |
| Federico Longo and Mariella Gauarnera |
Composer Federico Longo will take us on a journey to capture the expressive and communicative potential of sound. For Longo, sound has a memory of the sound that precedes it and the sound that comes after it. Hence, the “Memory of Sound” and the “Sound of Memory.” In a virtuous and circular process, sound creates memory and draws from memory. With this concept and awareness, Longo has been trying for many years to identify the message of sound and convey his own message through sound. Longo will explain the fundamental steps in the creative process of a composer, drawing on his own experiences through which he has been able to increase his awareness and ability to express himself through sound. In an unusual format, Longo will attempt to create a working session with the audience, in which he will play short excerpts that are particularly significant in the history of the musical repertoire. |
With the help of mezzo-soprano Mariella Gauarnera, we will hear how the human voice, an instrument with which we all have experience, can make us both instruments and interpreters at the same time. Through specific videos, Longo will show how sound is created, how it takes shape, how it breaks the silence that the composer initially had to create, and how it goes from being an intimate and personal concept to becoming a common and shared instrument. |
| In Annapolis, drawing on his experience as a conductor and performer, Longo will lead a St. John’s College Student Ensemble where you can clearly see how the performer can choose from a multitude of interpretative options, each different but equally valid. The piece of music can thus be compared to a diamond that changes its light depending on the angle from which it is viewed. |
